Course Requirements

How do I get started with the assignments?

Before beginning the course assignments, read the Getting Started, Inquiry Questions, and Teaching through Contemporary Art sections. This information is organized to guide you through conducting your own inquiry using online resources such as readings, video, Artist Index, and links. All of these resources together provide you with what you need to complete the assignments successfully.

What are the course requirements?

Course requirements are organized to consider the needs of three groups of participants:

Self-Paced, Non-Certificate Option
This course can be taken as a self-paced course without a certificate of participation. If you choose this option, please join in the class discussions and post assignments.

Moderated Course Requirements for Certificate of Participation
Learners in this course are expected to thoughtfully reflect on and respond to the readings and activities, and participate regularly in the class discussions by posting assignments and responses weekly. We hope students participate in more than just the minimum requirements to receive a certificate of participation.

Requirements for a Certificate of Participation
Post nine weekly reflections (one a week for weeks 1-9) to the Discussion Forum that summarize your thoughts about the weekly ideas, Inquiry Questions, and Visual e-journal entries.
Complete and post at least four weekly assignments in the Visual e-journal for weeks 2-9. Participate in the class discussions each week by posting at least one personal message and one response to a class member’s Visual e-journal.

Graduate Credit Course Requirements:

  • Participate in the class discussions each week by posting at least one personal message about the Inquiry Questions and one response to a class member’s posting on the Discussion Forum.
  • Post a weekly reflection to the Discussion Forum that summarizes your thoughts about the weekly ideas, Inquiry Questions, and Visual e-journal entries.
  • Complete the required Visual e-journal assignments and respond to two class members each week.
  • Submit an independent study project incorporating resources, skills, and concepts from this course. This project should be one of the following options.

Option A

Write a 6- to10-page, double spaced paper, addressing one or more issues from this course and how they can apply to your teaching and learning experiences. Your paper might be about using the Art:21 videos in teaching about contemporary art, the advantages and disadvantages of using generalizations as a form of curriculum organization, or another subject studied in this course. Your report should include at least five Web and five print resources or references. Submit your paper to the instructor via e-mail attachment as a Microsoft Word file, saved in Rich Text Format.

Option B

Develop and write a unit of study that contains at least three lessons that can help students explore ideas of identity and/or place. Submit your paper to the instructor via e-mail attachment as a Microsoft Word file, saved in Rich Text Format. (See Unit of Study Guidelines link.)

Option C

Identify and develop an annotated list of twenty Web sites about ideas discussed in this course. Sites might include information about art, artists, video and/or other resources that teachers would find useful when preparing to teach about these topics.

When are the assignments due?

Each weekly assignment is scheduled over a period of seven days. For example, Unit I, Week 1 begins on Monday and should be completed by the following Sunday.

The following is a suggestion for weekly online participation in the course. The online discussions need to happen between Monday and Friday for you to interact with other course members. Therefore, it is important that participants do not wait until Friday or the weekend to engage in the listserv discussions or to respond to the Instructional Questions using the threaded discussion forum. All online discussions are due at the end of the week in which they were assigned.

All other written weekly assignments will have a specific due date that corresponds to the last day of the week’s assignment.

Example: Week 2, Suggested Timelime

(Monday and Tuesday)
Course members should try to complete the readings and viewing of online material and resources at the beginning of each week.

(Wednesday through Friday)
Course members should use this time during the week to post comments, questions, and reflections to the listserv and to discuss the inquiry questions. The Visual e-journal, which provides the weekly online forms, can also be completed during this time.

(Friday through Sunday)
Course members should use this time to post their Discussion Forum summary and read and post responses to other course members’ Visual e-journal entries.
